February 3, 2004 Martin Cauchon made his name for two very progressive, and controversial pieces of legislation that he introduced as Minister of Justice, those being the Cannabis Reform Bill and the Act Respecting Certain Aspects of Legal Capacity for Marriage. While neither bill has passed through parliament as of yet, these are two issues that will be at the forefront of public debate within Canada for years to come. In fact, these are the two issues that have helped to globally define the nation as progressive, tolerant, and as The Economist referred to us, "cool." The federal government has referred three specific questions regarding same-sex marriages to the Supreme Court of Canada, and the Prime Minister seems somewhat reluctant to act upon the decriminalisation of marijuana before the federal election. Regardless, Martin Cauchon has established himself as a successful politician, a forward thinker in terms of policy, and a major political power broker in Quebec. Don't count on Mr. Cauchon's absence from politics to be permanent, however, as his name will most definitely be one that emerges as a candidate in the next leadership contest within the Liberal Party of Canada.
