Myriam Bedard, 2-time Olympic Gold medal winner in the biathalon, responded to Paul Martin's February 12 public request for anyone who knows anything about the sponsorship scandal to come forward.  In a letter dated February 13, Ms. Bedard outlined her firing from VIA Rail after speaking out about questionable transactions related to the sponsorship program.

In what must be classified as one of the most arrogant and chauvinistic comments to emerge in recent memory, Mr. Pelletier (formerly Jean Chretien's Chief of Staff and VIA Rail's Chairman of the Board) responded to the allegations with this:

"I don't want to be mean, but this is a poor, single woman. She's feeling the tension of being a single mother who has financial responsibilities. She's essentially looking for pity."

There is no sufficient way to respond to such demeaning comments other than to let Mr. Pelletier know that the year 1939 called to tell him that it isn't the same without him, and to also inform him that his annual dues to his Men's Club are well past due.

In another throwback to an age long passed, the Stephen Harper Conservative leadership campaign made an embarrassing mishap yesterday when an Ontario Aboriginal organization received a letter of congratulations regarding India's Republic Day, which celebrates the country's independence from British rule.

Of course, "Indians" in this country are not the same as "Indians" whose origins lie in India.  Mistakes such as this only reinforce the image Harper has of representing the views of the old Reform Party rather than those of the new Conservative Party.

In related campaign news, handlers for Mr. Harper have indicated that their first order of business after winning the leadership contest will be to amass a crew and set sail on the high seas in order to determine if indeed the world really is flat.
