January 22, 2004 Within the past month, RCMP raids have now occurred in two highly sensitive political environments, each with major implications regarding the public trust, the fourth estate, and the justice system in this country. Much of the heightened significance for each case stems from the fact that both investigations involve high-level employees of the government, and alleged abuses of trust that have occurred. Can you fault O'Neill for reporting an internally leaked document about the Maher Arar case, for which the federal government is unwilling to act upon through a public inquiry? Is the rampant speculation regarding drugs, influence peddling and money laundering in British Columbia due to an irresponsible media or a justice system not considering the public's right to information about their democratically elected government? One hopes that political influence is unable affect decisions within these types of situations. But then again, there is no way to determine that it doesn't. Comments? jonathan@tdhstrategies.com |
