January 19, 2004 Jack Layton's invitation to Liberals who are feeling disengaged is a very wise move. In the game of musical chairs that is Canadian partisan politics these days, MPs are either moving towards the political left, or retiring. Ideologically, the right is quite crowded, especially considering the latest incarnation of the Liberal party, and the NDP will be the biggest beneficiary of those voters and politicos looking for a new home. ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ The Iowa presidential caucus vote takes place today, and one can't help but feel that the eight remaining Democratic candidates are simply fighting for the right to be the runner-up in this coming November's US presidential election. ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ It is clear that Belinda Stronach is the favoured choice of the Canadian media to lead the Conservative Party of Canada. Not to take anything away from Ms. Stronach's credentials or capabilities, but when a political neophyte with little to no experience in politics is the most intriguing candidate for an entity consisting of the former official opposition and Canada's oldest political party, the word "lacklustre" is the most appropriate to describe the upcoming leadership race. ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ It looks like the stress of being in cabinet is getting to Transport Minister Tony Valeri, as evidenced by his baffling silence after it was announced that Westjet was moving its eastern hub from his home city of Hamilton to new digs in Toronto. One can only imagine the look on Mr. Valeri's face when Sheila Copps defeats him in the election as an all-star candidate for the NDP. ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ ∞ Speculation in British Columbia remains rampant, as a decision on whether to release information contained in the search warrants executed on the provincial legislature has once again been delayed. From what has been reported in the extremely voracious coverage by the Vancouver Sun, however, it seems likely that the entire affair will have a much more detrimental effect on Paul Martin's Liberal government then it will on Gordon Campbell's Liberal government.
