January 15, 2004 Sheila of course ran a valiant but futile campaign against the massive Paul Martin political machine, only to get crushed at the Liberal leadership convention in November. Her role within the Liberal party has been entirely diminished, and now she is poised to fight what will most certainly be a vicious nomination battle with Transport Minister Tony Valeri in the new riding of Hamilton East-Stoney Creek. In terms of politics, policy and personality, it is clear that Copps is not being made to feel welcome as the Martin electoral machine gears up for battle. Jack Layton is preparing for his first federal election campaign by attempting to recruit an all-star team of candidates, starting with the return of Ed Broadbent announced last month. If Sheila does decide to make the jump, she would definitely fit this profile. An inspired and reinvigorated Sheila Copps under the NDP banner might turn out to be Messrs. Martin and Valeri worst nightmare. Comments? jonathan@tdhstrategies.com |
